Obese and Pregnant

This really makes me laugh out loud! I am watching a show on Discovery Health and it's just like hearing a broken record..."If you're fat and you get pregnant, you will be unhealthy, your baby will be unhealthy, you shouldn't gain any weight, you will have diabetes, you will be at risk for heart trouble, your baby will be huge...", etc, etc, etc. I have heard this all, with each pregnancy. When I got pregnant with Clara, I weighed 280lbs the day I found out. When I walked out of the hospital after having her, I weighed 220lbs. I lost 60lbs!! No problems, never have had diabetes or heart issues, (or anything else). Clara weighed 7lbs, no problems. (Other than the cleft, which they still do not know what causes that). When I got pregnant with Mary, I weighed 220lbs. I gained 15lbs. Mary was fine. She weighed 7lbs. I never did get that pesky diabetes or have that heart attack. I weighed 270lbs when I started this pregnancy. I now weigh 252lbs. Haven't gained a single pound. So far, so good. I doubt she will be a massive baby or have any problems.

The thing here is, the doctors are disgusted by overweight women. They can't fathom a big woman being healthy. They tell you in their uppity tone that you must NOT gain any weight or this and this and this will happen to you and your baby. They try to make you feel guilty about getting pregnant while being big. They insinuate that any problems you may face WILL be due to your weight and not other underlying issues you may have already had. They even had the nerve to try to tell me that Clara's cleft may have been due to my weight. HA! What a joke! I was still big with Mary, no cleft. There are lots of skinny women with cleft babies and lots of big women without them. HA! Eat that Dr. Whoever!

All these articles that are written daily about being 'FAT and Pregnant' just get under my skin. They are trying to scare the fat out of you. They believe that if you feel guilty enough or if you are scared enough, you will just squat somewhere and drop that extra 50-100lbs...like you have just been holding onto it, waiting for a real reason to let it go. Cause it's that easy, right?

Well, I'm here to tell you that there are skinny women with gestational diabetes, heart problems, breathing problems, and many other issues. There are fat women who do NOT have any of these issues. There are skinny women who deliver 15lb. babies and fat women who have 4lb. babies. It has nothing to do with your weight for the majority of the time. Can weight affect your health and your pregnancy? Of course it can. But that does not mean it has to. You can't just blame every problem on someone's weight. That's a ridiculous scare tactic.

The worst thing, is that a lot of the time these doctors also tell these fat mother's that they have to have a c-section because of their weight, a vaginal delivery can be dangerous for both mother and child. UGH!!!!! I could just punch all these doctors right in the kisser! Go home and eat your spinach leaf! Hope you don't look like an idiot when you drop dead at 45 of a heart attack. Moron!

I am not claiming that all fat people are healthy, we're not. But I wouldn't try to claim that all skinny people were healthy either. And I am not saying that there are never problems due to weight on a pregnant woman. I'm sure there are. What I am saying is that just because you may be fat when you get pregnant, that doesn't mean you have to have health issues or that you will. You can be fat and take care of yourself. I promise. You can be fat and have a perfectly fine pregnancy. I promise. You can be fat and have a very healthy baby. I promise.
